Ten Tips for Your First Cruise

Ten Tips for Your First Cruise

Cruising is one of the easiest ways to see several destinations in one trip — but first-timers often have plenty of questions. Here are the tips I share with every new cruiser.

  1. Pick the ship before the itinerary. The atmosphere on board varies enormously between cruise lines.
  2. Choose your cabin location carefully. Mid-ship and lower decks feel the least motion.
  3. Fly in the day before. A delayed flight should never cost you the cruise.
  4. Pack a carry-on for day one. Luggage can take hours to reach your cabin.
  5. Book speciality dining early. Popular restaurants fill quickly.
  6. Review the drinks and Wi-Fi packages. They can be good value if you will use them.
  7. Plan shore excursions in advance. The best ones sell out.
  8. Check passport and visa rules for every port of call.
  9. Buy travel insurance that includes medical evacuation.
  10. Use an advisor. Perks such as onboard credit are often available through travel advisors.
